Happy Holidays! I want to share my gratitude to all of you for your community spirit, generosity and support in what has been an unprecedented and challenging year.

This year, the holidays are not quite the same as in past years, though I hope you each find moments of joy, new ways to connect with family and friends and, of course, laughter.

Despite the heaviness of our collective challenges, there are amazing stories of generosity that remind me of the importance of ICF’s mission, and our role to connect donors with community needs for maximum impact.

Recently, we had a donor make a significant, six-figure donation that came with a special story.

This donor’s family established a Donor Advised Fund at ICF more than a decade ago and she’s had very little involvement with it. She came into an unexpected windfall this year and asked her attorney to recommend organizations working with Idahoans affected by COVID-19. Her attorney is someone who has worked closely with ICF over the years and he suggested she reach out to us.

We shared the impact of the COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund for Idaho, which has given more than $1.3 million to community organizations throughout the state that provide housing, food and basic needs, physical and mental health services, childcare, and support for those in domestic abuse relationships.

She chose to make an immediate contribution to the COVID Fund and add money to her family Donor Advised Fund, which can be granted over time.

Kris Kamann and I met her outside the ICF office so she could drop off the checks and we could express our thanks. Her response was beautiful: “What good is this money to me when so many are hurting?”

To me, that is the true spirit of philanthropy and such a wonderful story to share with all of you this holiday season.

With gratitude for all you do,

Forever Idaho News
Exciting changes to our Forever Idaho Grantmaking

We are making some exciting changes and updates to our Forever Idaho grant cycles. In the past, our Forever Idaho grant program has operated in three regions: north, southwest and east Idaho. Based on community research and population analysis, we have now split the southwest region into two, adding a new region – south central. This map shows the new regions.

“We believe these changes will better fit the unique needs of the communities we serve,” said Cara Nielsen, vice president of philanthropy and impact. “It also allows us to expand the role of the Regional Councils.”

In addition to making grant recommendations, the Regional Councils will learn about community needs and the local organizations working on those needs, especially in ICF’s Areas of Impact: mental and physical health, educational opportunities, family homelessness and basic needs, and access to services.

“Making these changes was important to continue evolving our community-driven philanthropy,” Nielsen said. “We want to work with grantees to create lasting change by putting decisions about community problems into the hands of those who are working to solve them.”
