The push they need: ICF college scholarships |
The ultimate career goal of Emmett High School senior Jessica Oribio is to be a pediatric nurse. And she’s working now to make it happen.
As an office aid for Emmett High’s counseling office. Jessica has been using all of the scholarship assistance available to her and her fellow classmates.
“I’ve already turned in five or six scholarships,” she said. “I want to get a really good education and not have to worry about taking out so many loans.”
The Idaho Community Foundation has five scholarships that benefit Emmett High School students and nearly $93,000 has been distributed since 1999.
|
Emmett High School senior Jessica Oribio has applied for several scholarships with support from the school’s counseling staff. |
ICF scholarships aren’t just for Emmett High School. We have more than 70 scholarship opportunities for students seeking assistance with the cost of higher education. In 2017, 220 students throughout Idaho received an ICF scholarship.
Emmett High’s College and Career Mentor Kerilee Jewkes said only a small percentage of students have applied for scholarships in the past, but the number is increasing.
Emmett used to have local jobs that didn’t require a college education or postsecondary training, but those are now gone. She said many of her students are the first in their families to attend college and aren’t sure they want to go.
“Getting a scholarship can be the push they need to take the first step,” Kerilee said. “It gives them options.”
Kerilee said many graduates return to Emmett High after a year or two at college to thank the counseling staff for their encouragement and to urge other students to apply for scholarships.
“Once they get to school and are on their own they are surprised at how expensive it is to be an adult,” she said. “They realize how meaningful these scholarships are.”
The deadline to submit the ICF Scholarship Application is March 15.To learn more about scholarship opportunities through ICF, click here or email Community Impact Assistant Lisa Bearg at lbearg@idcomfdn.org.
