From the President

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Idaho Community Foundation and we are so thrilled to be able to mark this milestone with our supporters. We are excited to celebrate our past and we invite you to help us shape our future!

2018 will be filled with gratitude for those who laid the foundation for ICF to surpass $110 million dollars in grantmaking during our history. We kicked off the year with a fun Happy New Year video featuring grant recipients, ICF fund holders, our Board of Directors, staff and others. We encourage you to take a look if you haven’t seen it already. It has bloopers!

Karen Bilowith

Throughout the year we will recognize people, families and organizations who have contributed to our success during our first 30 years with our ICF 30 profiles. The latest one is the Wood River Women’s Foundation.

We will celebrate throughout the state with four annual luncheons, ICF’s signature events that recognize our Friends of the Foundation honorees, grant recipients and those who truly define community philanthropy in Idaho. Scheduled dates are:

  • Southwest – May 23 at JUMP in Boise
  • North – June 13 at the Hagadone Event Center in Coeur d’Alene
  • Central – Aug. 29 at the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum
  • East – Sept. 19, location to be determined

We also invite you to participate in one of many Community Conversations that ICF will convene across the state. These will be opportunities to hear from local partners about key issues in their area, the ways in which the community is addressing these issues and how ICF can help.

Last week we hosted Community Conversations in Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston. We plan to convene future Community Conversations in American Falls, Burley, Emmett, Grangeville, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Sun Valley and Twin Falls.

We’ll be redesigning our logo and website – and we’d love to have your input! If you have any suggestions for features or ideas for our new website, please email Chief Communications and Marketing Director Jennifer Oxley at joxley@idcomfdn.org.

And finally, we will close out the year with a big anniversary bash at JUMP in Boise on November 14.

Without your partnership, none of our success would be possible.  You demonstrate how people coming together to support the issues and organizations that they care about can bring about positive changes to communities across our great state. We are looking forward to this special year!

The push they need: ICF college scholarships

The ultimate career goal of Emmett High School senior Jessica Oribio is to be a pediatric nurse. And she’s working now to make it happen.

As an office aid for Emmett High’s counseling office. Jessica has been using all of the scholarship assistance available to her and her fellow classmates.

“I’ve already turned in five or six scholarships,” she said. “I want to get a really good education and not have to worry about taking out so many loans.”

The Idaho Community Foundation has five scholarships that benefit Emmett High School students and nearly $93,000 has been distributed since 1999.

 Emmett High Student
Emmett High School senior Jessica Oribio has applied for several scholarships with support from the school’s counseling staff.

ICF scholarships aren’t just for Emmett High School. We have more than 70 scholarship opportunities for students seeking assistance with the cost of higher education. In 2017, 220 students throughout Idaho received an ICF scholarship.

Emmett High’s College and Career Mentor Kerilee Jewkes said only a small percentage of students have applied for scholarships in the past, but the number is increasing.

Emmett used to have local jobs that didn’t require a college education or postsecondary training, but those are now gone. She said many of her students are the first in their families to attend college and aren’t sure they want to go.

“Getting a scholarship can be the push they need to take the first step,” Kerilee said. “It gives them options.”

Kerilee said many graduates return to Emmett High after a year or two at college to thank the counseling staff for their encouragement and to urge other students to apply for scholarships.

“Once they get to school and are on their own they are surprised at how expensive it is to be an adult,” she said. “They realize how meaningful these scholarships are.”

The deadline to submit the ICF Scholarship Application is March 15.To learn more about scholarship opportunities through ICF, click here or email Community Impact Assistant Lisa Bearg at lbearg@idcomfdn.org.
