A Forever Idaho North grant of nearly $14,000 will help the Friday Friends program in Boundary County purchase supplies and pay for its staff
ICF grants largest-ever Forever Idaho awards

The Idaho Community Foundation has strategically redesigned its Forever Idaho grants based on input from its nonprofit partners, resulting in larger awards for Idaho community organizations.

ICF recently awarded 32 Forever Idaho North grants totaling almost $241,000 in the counties of Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Clearwater, Idaho, Kootenai, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce and Shoshone.

“This grant will really help us provide services to people in crisis, along with education for others in our community,” said Kellie Lavigne, Executive Director of the Shoshone County Crisis Center and Resource Center in Wallace, which received a $15,000 grant. “We were very surprised at the amount.”

Priest River Ministries received $4,000-$5,000 from Forever Idaho North each of the last five years, so Executive Director Rhonda Encinas said this year’s $20,000 grant was unexpected and came after a busy and challenging 2020.

“We needed to regroup and figure out how to best serve our communities with fewer people choosing to work or volunteer,” she said. “We hope to use this ‘surprise’ funding to hire a part-time manager for our Spirit Lake location.”

The UI Extension in Boundary County will use its grant of almost $14,000 to continue the Friday Friends program, which was created 15 years ago to give elementary-aged children a safe, educational and affordable place to go on Fridays during the school year when the school district moved to a four-day school week.

“This helps ensure we will be able to pay our two part-time program staff and not worry about cutting their hours, in addition to purchasing supplies for the program,” said Amy Robertson, Extension Educator.

ICF eased restrictions on its Forever Idaho grants this year based on lessons learned from grantees during last year’s record-breaking grantmaking. ICF gave more than 2,100 grants, scholarships and organization distributions totaling nearly $12.4 million in 2020.

“Giving larger grants with fewer restrictions on how to spend them was crucial to nonprofits working on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis in Idaho,” said Cara Nielsen, ICF’s Vice President, Philanthropy and Impact. “We are carrying that forward with our Forever Idaho grants this year.”
