Diversity, equity and inclusion in Idaho

This has been a difficult week across the country, in our region and within our state. Deeply embedded issues of diversity, equity and inclusion have added to the uncertainty we feel as we work to recover and rebuild from the COVID pandemic. Idaho is not removed from the broader issues that are upending communities around the country. They are relevant and important to the mission of the Idaho Community Foundation to enrich the quality of life throughout Idaho.

Our work with the COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund, and our earlier grantmaking for Census outreach, demonstrates that vulnerable populations across the state are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and struggle to make themselves heard and counted. At ICF, we see this, and we have the potential to contribute to solutions.

Idaho’s deep divisions can be seen across political, social and economic spectrums. Disparities exist between rural and more densely populated areas, and historical inequities prevent some Idahoans from reaching their full potential.

As a community foundation, we serve as a bridge between people and communities. We are committed to respecting and honoring diverse perspectives and bringing communities together.

Community foundations across the country strive to promote equity, inclusion and representation in their work. As a network, we are all deeply committed to ‚Äčlistening to and lifting the voices in our regions. At ICF, our strategic framework guides us in this work. Our core values include learning from, listening to and valuing people and perspectives:

Leadership: By bringing people and resources together, we mobilize philanthropy.

Collaboration: We learn from and work with others in partnership to better understand Idaho’s greatest needs and achieve positive impact.

Inclusion: We believe that our philanthropy should mirror the people of Idaho, and that diversity and equity are essential to our work.

Enduring: We have deep roots in Idaho and have been building community philanthropy for more than 30 years.

Stewardship: We support and preserve donor intent across generations.

It is our hope that as we reflect on our current environment, we can recommit to our values of inclusion and collaboration and demonstrate these through our community impact. ICF strives to be a community builder for all Idahoans and to strengthen our state through philanthropy.

As a steward of charitable resources for the public good, we have an obligation to promote funding and support equitable programs that ensure health, education, housing and access to services for everyone in our community.

We look forward to the journey.

Best wishes,

Steve Carr, ICF Board Chair

Karen Bilowith, President and CEO
