Frequently Asked Questions

A community foundation is a publicly supported, nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that maintains a diverse grant making program. Unlike private foundations, its funds are derived from many unrelated donors. Community foundations are classified as public charities, subjecting them to different tax policies.

A charitable fund at ICF allows clients to be strategic with their giving and use ICF's deep community knowledge. A single large gift can be an administrative burden to an organization. Grants can be distributed over time. ICF completes due diligence before distributing grants.

A DAF can provide the benefits of a private foundation without administrative complexities. Advantages include higher tax deductions, grantmaking support, professional investment management, and the option to give anonymously. Eliminates annual distribution requirements, tax returns and audits, and excise taxes.

Clients can recommend grants to any qualified 501(c)(3) public charity or educational/governmental entity. ICF must reject recommendations that would benefit an individual, fulfill a personal obligation, support a political campaign, or go to a private foundation.

Yes, clients may request that a fund name and/or the donor's name remain anonymous, including in ICF's annual reports or other publications.

ICF will continue to follow the instructions in the fund agreement. If an organization ceases to exist, ICF will find a replacement doing similar work. For DAFs, clients may name successor advisors to continue the family's legacy.

Yes, as long as the client receives no personal benefit from the grant.

Yes. While ICF funds are established to "primarily benefit" Idaho, donors may recommend grants to qualified public charities throughout the country as long as most grants go to Idaho organizations.
