Building a Stronger Idaho.

From a bold idea in 1988 to a statewide movement today, our history is rooted in collaboration and generosity. The Idaho Community Foundation and The Nonprofit Center strengthen communities across all 44 counties – connecting people who care with causes that matter.

The Beginning of a Statewide Vision

In 1988, the Whittenberger Foundation approached Boise Cascade Chairman and CEO John Fery with an idea: Idaho needed a community foundation to ensure charitable giving reached every corner of the state. Together, they envisioned a statewide source of philanthropy and rallied support from businesses, individuals, and communities.

From the start, our founders committed to statewide representation and equitable grantmaking. Principles that still guide us today. In 1991, we awarded our first grants: 31 awards totaling $164,000. Since then, more than $220 million has been invested in Idaho communities in all 44 counties.

Growing Our Impact

Over the decades, we've expanded our reach and deepened our impact. In 2024, the Idaho Nonprofit Center merged into The Idaho Community Foundation, uniting two statewide leaders to better serve the people and places that make Idaho home.

Together, we help Idahoans turn generosity into lasting impact by supporting nonprofits, fueling local leadership, and connecting people who care with the causes and communities they love.
